Vision for higher education and research in 2030

Minister of Education Sanni Grahn-Laasonen has launched a process for creating a vision for the Finnish higher education and research in 2030. The vision was drawn up in broad cooperation with higher education institutions and other stakeholders and was published in October 2017.

Vision for higher education and research in 2030

The purpose is to formulate a future scenario which enables the development of a high-quality, effective and internationally competitive higher education system in Finland by the year 2030. In the course of this work, different alternatives and models for improving the Finnish higher education system will be examined and their impacts and feasibility assessed. The development needs of the Finnish higher education and research will be reviewed and the future desired state defined on the basis of the changes in the national and international operating environment.

The work will be carried out in broad and open cooperation with the higher education institutions and their staff, students and stakeholders. Preparatory work will be carried out in thematic seminars, workshops to be arranged in Vaasa and Tampere, and on the online brainstorming platform. The topic of the future of higher education and research will also be opened for public debate.

Online brainstorming platform for higher education and research

In the spring 2017, the Ministry of Education and Culture launched an online brainstorming platform to support the work for creating a vision for higher education and research. Especially the staff, students and stakeholders of higher education institutions were invited to actively participate in the discussion on the future of higher education and research on this platform.

The open data derived from the online brainstorming platform and a summary of the responses submitted:

The work for the vision for higher education and research continued over the summer 2017 on the online brainstorming platform. On the online brainstorming platform, ideas presented so far were assessed and further elaborated.

Two main themes can be seen in the ideas worked on during the spring and summer: first, a need for more experts with an academic degree and new kinds of skills, and second, a need for a culture of working together and visionary know-how evolving from it.

Online brainstorming platform on preliminary guidelines for the implementation of the vision 2030 closed on 10 April 2018. Answers were received 1234 in Finnish, 45 in Swedish and 38 in English. The results are currently being analysed.

Thank you for your active participation in the implementation of the vision for higher education and research in 2030!
